To Spay or Not to Spay?

Postby Rache3 » Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:17 pm

I'm considering getting my rabbit spayed. I love my bunny, but she is a tad high-strung sometimes, and always pees on soft things even though she's litter trained. Therefore, I can never hold her when I'm on the couch or invite her up on to my bed. The catch is, she's 6 years old. Is it still safe to get her spayed? In addition, will this possibly solve my problems?

Welcome. If your girl is already six, then some of her behaviours are going to be habit rather than hormonal now, so spaying may not make a difference to them. On the other hand, she is at very high risk of genital tract cancers, which spaying would sort out.
As for risks of anaesthetic, it is a relatively risky thing to do in any small animal, and rabbits are particularly prone to stress - and this risk does increase with age. If she's generally healthy, though... It does really depend on you and your vet's assessment of the risk:benifit - does the benifit of removing the risk of ovarian/endometrial tumours (and possibly a tumour already there that you don't know about) outweigh the risk of the anaesthetic?
